The European honey bee (Apis mellifera) lives in perennial colonies with stored resources in a central hive and a worker caste to help gather food and raise young. Honey bees are uncommon in the dunes, though they can be observed throughout most of the year. They are long-distance fliers, traveling to the dunes from surrounding areas to forage on seasonally abundant flowering plants.  [Learn More]
