Common Name: mason bee
Scientific Name: Osmia integra
Flight season: April-June

Recognition characters: Large (15 mm), robust; thorax with golden brown pile, abdomen shiny metallic blue-black; females carry pollen in scopae (brushes of specialized hair) located on the underside of their abdomen; males sport a golden "beard".


Nest sites: Nests can be found in biotic soil crusts, (dense mats of moss and lichen coalesced over sand), or small patches of open sand consolidated by plant roots.


Nest materials: Leaf material collected from beach strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis) and beach evening primrose (Chamissonia cheiranthifolia ssp. cheiranthifolia) is made into a pulp and formed into individual nest cells.
